The Dufferin Grove district was first settled by the Denison Family, who immigrated to Canada from England in 1792. The Denison’s were active participants in Toronto’s early military and political affairs. Their country villas were Toronto landmarks that had titles such as “Dover Court”, “Rush Holme”, and “Heydon Villa”. In 1834, with the city encroaching at their doorstep, the Denison’s decided to clear the dense forest covering their property, and began cultivating this land. The fertile soil in the area yielded abundant crops and brought the Denison’s great wealth. However, by the 1880s, the value of the Denison estates lay in housing development not agriculture. Thus rows of crops were gradually replaced by rows of houses and the current neighborhood was developed.

Dufferin Grove is very green, with many trees and some of largest gardens and yards in Toronto. The neighborhood has a very active night life, with many “hip” and urban restaurants scattered along Bloor and College. There are also many small independent specialty shops like bakeries, smoothie shops, and bike stores

College Street is the very first Little Italy in Toronto and an authentically unique neighborhood that is incredibly rich in both character and culture. It all started when Italians first arrived in Toronto in large numbers in the early 20th century, and settled in an area known as “The Ward” – centered on University Avenue, and College Street. In the 1920s, most Italians moved west of Bathurst, and the College-Clinton area emerged as the City’s major Little Italy.

The area experienced a significant influx in Italian settlement in the 1950s. Mostly working in construction or factory workers, some established small businesses along College – bakeries, fruit markets, meat markets, salons, tailor shops, barber shops. It wasn’t until they became more established that they started to venture into such businesses as cafes, restaurants, theaters and communications.
